Making a Career Pivot

Today, only 27% of college graduates have a career related to their major. The job market for recent graduates is extremely competitive, which is why many young adults settle for a job offer. Not long after they do this, they realize they’re not passionate about what they’re doing or perhaps whom they’re doing it for. It can be extremely difficult to get a feel for a company’s culture unless you experience it yourself for an extended period of time. If you’re feeling trapped in a position or company culture that is unfulfilling, it’s may be time to look for work elsewhere. But this is not a decision that you should hastily overnight. Switching careers takes time because you have to consider your options, plan ahead and follow through. Below are tips on how to help you switch careers successfully.Career Pivot

Consider What to Do Next

If you've determined that you're unhappy in you're current position and need to do something else, it's time to consider how you go about doing that. Make a list of what you're looking for in your next position. This could be any number of things depending on your situation and is circumstantial.

Take the Strength Finder Test, from Tom Rath's book Strength finder 2.0. This is a great way to determine what your strengths and weaknesses which will be useful during your job search. This may also reveal underlying reasons why you're making a career pivot in the first place.

Common Mistakes Professionals Make When Changing Careers

The biggest mistake you can make when making a career pivot is not doing your research properly. And the second most common mistake is trying to make a career pivot on your own. Make sure to build a strong network and use this to your advantage when it comes time to make the switch. Many professionals today stay in a position or at one company for 3 to 5 years before going elsewhere. Your peers know what it's like to work at a number of different organizations and their experience will be beneficial for you. This is one of the best steps to take before making a career pivot.

Finally: Making the Leap

By the time you've decided to make a career pivot, you've networked, researched, and strengthened your skills as much as possible. When you're looking for a company culture that fits better or want to pursue a new career entirely, we hope you take these few tips into consideration during your search.

Since we're in the records keeping business, one last thing we want to make note of is the state of your records when you leave a company. To learn more about how long employers keep records, check out our previous blog on the legal liability of retaining records!
